 Complete Syllabus -  6 Modules

MODULE 1 - BRIDGE THEORY

Basic Bridge and Guide to Better Card Play (Sections 1 and 2), both by Ron Klinger, contain virtually everything a teacher needs to know in order to pass the basic theory test. The theory test is divided into two segments, one on bidding theory and one on play theory. Each candidate is required to pass both segments. Minimum pass mark is 50%. The outline of the basic system required is in the C.B.A.I. Diary.

MODULE 2 - COMMUNICATIONS

Teachers are required to

 1. Draft a flyer advertising classes on one of the following subjects

. Opening Leads

. Slam Bidding

. Transfers

. Defensive signaling

. Doubles

2. Prepare hand-outs on the same subject

3. Speak on a prepared topic for a period of three to five minutes  - see module 6

4. Write headlines, notes and diagrams on a white board

5. Demonstrate the art of asking questions

6. Engage in Group Dynamics including control, guidance and individual needs

7. Open an e-mail account and provide said address

MODULE 3 - TEACHING PRACTICE

Teachers are required to prepare three lessons, one of which should be on card play technique, from which one will be chosen by the assessor and the candidate will demonstrate his or her teaching kills before a peer group.

Marks will be allocated under the following headings. C.B.A.I. Manuals may be used.

1. Preparation - evidence of having rehearsed, lesson notes, prepared deals, etc.

2. Content - one main topic, fundamentally correct in theory, organised and developed

3. Presentation - introduction, recap of previous lesson, repetition, reinforcement,

questions, recap, summing up etc.

4. Personal Skills - posture, body language, voice projection, eye-contact, dealing with

questions, moving among tables etc.

5. Use Of Visual Aids: cards, curtain cards, hand diagrams, chart, white or blackboard,

projector etc.

Those not using the C.B.A.I. Teaching Manuals will be required to prepare a scheme of lessons to be given over a period, for example a 10 weeks course.

MODULE 4 - USE OF C.B.A.I. TEACHERS' MANUALS

All candidates will be instructed in the use of the Manuals

After  successfully completing this course, Teachers will be qualified to use the three C.B.A.I. Manuals, two on bidding and one on play.   The manuals are available from the One Stop Bridge Shop at a cost of €30 each.

MODULE 5 - BASIC TOURNAMENT DIRECTION

Teachers will be instructed on the following:

1.Basic Howell and Mitchell movements

2.The ethics of the game

3.Those laws which are regularly invoked at club level

4.Scoring match-pointed pairs competitions and team competitions.

Teachers will also be tested on scoring match-pointed pairs competitions and team competitions.

MODULE 6 - HISTORY AND ORGANISATION OF THE GAME

. How Contract Bridge Evolved

. Foundation of the C.B.A.I.

. How game is administered in Ireland

. Thirteen Regions of the C.B.A.I. and management structure

. Affiliation Scheme - Membership cards

. National and regional Competitions

. The grading and Master points scheme

. Irelands place in the International Scene, the EBL and the WBF

Candidates will be asked to research bridge in their local area dealing individually with each of the bullet points above and present their findings in the form of a short oral presentation on the day
