Due to the effects of the COVID pandemic, it has not been possible to run the CBAI’s new bridge teacher programme since early 2020. The Teaching Committee plans to rectify that very shortly, and will hold two sets of new teachers’ seminars over the summer – one in the Templeogue Bridge Centre in Dublin on 21/22 May, and the other in the Cavan Crystal Hotel, Cavan, on 18/19 June. Applications are invited from members interested in becoming a bridge teacher.

The CBAI’s accreditation programme operates as follows. First, to be considered for the programme, candidates must pass two tests, one on bidding and one on cardplay, to demonstrate that they have the basic competence to teach students. These tests are carried out in the candidate’s own local area, and there is no charge to do the tests. Once a candidate passes these preliminary tests, they will be invited to attend whichever of the weekends above suits them best. At this weekend session, they will be given guidance and advice on all aspects of bridge teaching by a panel of experienced teachers. They will also undergo the final element of the assessment process, by delivering a class live to their peers, under the eye of a team of assessors, to gauge their ability to teach. If the candidate passes this final test, they will be accredited as a bridge teacher within the CBAI, and will benefit from the full range of supports provided by the Association. One key support is recommended immediately to anyone intending to participate in the programme; a full set of three teaching manuals, with a syllabus, class notes, handouts for students, and prepared hands for play, is available from the CBAI at a cost of €30 per set or €90 total (plus €9 postage if relevant). The cost of the weekend seminars is €140 per person to include light meals and tea/coffee, but not accommodation.

You’ll find full details of the programme, including some sample questions (with answers) from previous versions of the preliminary tests, elsewhere on this site. If you are interested in taking part on the programme, or would like further details, please contact the Teaching Committee Convenor, Seamus Costello, on (087-2890814).
