The CBAI’s Master Pairs competition was held live for the first time since 2019 over the weekend of 10/11 December. An excellent turnout of more than 80 pairs from across the country, even in face of adverse weather conditions, represented the largest CBAI gathering since the return to live bridge, and continued the gradual upward trend in numbers. Our thanks to all who participated.
The prizewinners were:
- 1st Nick FitzGibbon & Adam Mesbur
- 2nd Pat Cassidy & Billy Ronan
- 3rd Fred Barry & Paul Porteous
- 4th Wojciech Gorczyca & Marcin Rudzinski
- 5th Peter Goodman & Dan McIntosh
- 6th Tom Gilligan & David Terry
- Leading Regional Masters Luca Crone & Matthew O’Farrell
- Leading Area Masters Bill O’Hanlon & Tony Ward
- First Session Prize James Heneghan & Karel De Raeymaeker
- Second Session Prize Helen & Brendan Sheridan
- Third Session Prize Hugh McDermott & Denis Mortell
FitzGibbon/Mesbur enjoyed a comfortable margin of victory, even allowing for a heavy defeat to the eventual runners-up in their final round, and maintained their very strong record in this competition. They have now won the event on seven occasions in partnership, including the last live event in 2019, and each has won it once with another partner. Full results with board records here. Many thanks to our TD team of Fearghal O’Boyle, Mairead Basquille, and Bernard Higgins for running the competition smoothly.
We also took the opportunity to present their commemorative salvers to the recently elevated Grand Masters who were in attendance – Carol-Ann Cummins, Joan Kenny, Mark Moran, and Tomás Roche. Many congratulations again to each of them on achieving the highest rank in Irish bridge.
