A reminder to all CBAI members that a number of items in which you may be interested will be closing shortly.

Firstly, February 28 is the closing date for nominations for the President’s Award, which every year recognises the unsung heroes and heroines of Irish bridge – the volunteers without whom clubs or regions could not function, but who never seek acclaim or put themselves forward for formal office. They can be teachers, TDs, scorers, administrators, virtual club managers, fundraisers, people who set up and clean up the playing room, etc.; in many cases our volunteers perform several of these roles all at once. To nominate someone, you’ll need a special form which is available on request from Head Office. Anyone nominated previously but not chosen as a winner remains a candidate, so there is no need to nominate them again. There are always lots of deserving candidates, but we can only have one winner, so apologies in advance if your nominee is not chosen.

And our new online Irish Bridge Journal contained two quizzes, one on bidding and one on card play, with small prizes offered to the leading responders (in various grades) over the four-edition season. It is fair to say that our adjudicators, Bob Pattinson and BJ O’Brien respectively, have not to date been swamped with entries. So we’ve decided to extend the closing date to Friday 10 March, to allow everyone a bit more time to get their grey cells working on the problems and come up with some answers. These quizzes are both good fun and a good way to improve your bridge, and we promise to name only the best contributors, so why not give them a go! You’ll find the Journal here; the bidding quiz is on page 28 and the play quiz on page 30.
