Today is a momentous day for the CBAI. We say (a reluctant) goodbye to Paul Porteous, who has been at the helm of the organisation for the best part of thirty years, and has played a very substantial role in its development and growth. Thanks to all the regions, clubs, and individuals who have sent on their good wishes to Paul, or marked his departure in some other way. We will all miss him hugely. If you have not already seen it in our Newsletter, President Emeritus Joe Moran’s short tribute to Paul captures both his personality and his impact on Irish bridge very well.

Paul has promised to stay involved in Irish bridge, and to give us the benefit of his advice whenever we need it. He’ll also be playing more often, perhaps even in partnership with his wife Maureen who took up the game a few years back. We’re sure all the CBAI members will join us in thanking Paul for all he has done for Irish bridge, and in wishing himself and Maureen a very long, happy, and healthy retirement together.

We plan to mark Paul’s retirement formally at some stage over the next few weeks, when the numbers that can attend will increase; however, places will still be limited, so it will certainly not be possible to invite everyone who has had dealings with Paul over the years.
